Colorado Wedding DJ Cost
I am a Fort Collins Colorado Wedding DJ and this blog will address approximately how much a Couple could end up paying a Fort Collins Wedding DJ. I will include information about my pricing, and any other information I include is what I’ve heard around the old grapevine, so you can take it for what it is worth. I am writing this to give couples an idea of what it might cost to hire a professional Colorado Wedding DJ. Whether or not you should is another question, and the price often factors into the answer.
First let me explain how I bid, and it may or may not be similar to other DJ’s. I establish my bid according to what the couple needs me to do. The reception costs a certain amount. Adding the ceremony to my duties adds a cost. Locations and venues affect the bid because of setup situations and distance. Many DJ’s bid on a four hour basis, and then add a certain amount per hour. I do not because I have yet to encounter the four hour reception, and I don’t require my clients to do math. I want it to be easy on them, so I bid on the amount of time that they need. But basically, I know my prices to handle a reception at all the Northern Colorado venues, and handling the ceremony is extra. Other additions, like lights, musicians, singers, special props could add costs as well.
The most expensive Fort Collins DJ’s cost around $1500 to $2000 for a four hour reception. What you receive for that will vary from DJ to DJ. From my interactions in the Fort Collins entertainment community, I have heard of numerous people who charge in this range that have very good reputations. When I spend this much money I require or at least hope for quality, and at least a few Fort Collins DJ’s in this price range will reportedly handle your wedding very professionally at these prices.
On the low end, you can probably find someone to do your wedding for around $500. In this situation, it may be wise to triple check references and people who have heard them play. They either really want to give a good price, or are admitting with their prices that they are on the lower end of the Northern Colorado market. Do your homework here, because the wrong DJ can absolutely crush a day that is supposed to be among the most special in your life.
That seems to be the range, $1500 – $500. My company, Paul Wozniak Productions is pretty much smack dab in the middle of that. I arrived at my prices because in my life I believe in receiving and offering great value. I bid for specific services and every wedding is different. For each wedding I spend at least four, usually 6 and often 10 hours preparing before the actual day. Some of it is simple equipment maintenance that is required to keep everything kosher. Most of it is working a playlist around the musical tastes that my clients have communicated to me at my website form www.paulwozniak.com and turning notes into workable materials for the big day.
There are many things that factor into the cost of a DJ.
Audio equipment is precise and beautiful and expensive, and a big part of the game for a Colorado Wedding DJ is setup and tear down. That’s wear and tear times ten. So if DJ’s seem expensive, give us a bit of a break, because so is our equipment.
On top of the equipment and the preparation, part of the cost in hiring your Fort Collins DJ involves the way they interact with the people in the room. You will need a public speaker at your wedding to inform people of what is happening. They’ll need to know when to sit for dinner, what events are happening, reminders to sign the guestbook, shuttle info, etc. Professional announcements are usually noticed when they aren’t there. The person who is on the microphone is an essential part to keeping the elegance and beauty in your wedding. Less is truly more when it comes to announcements at a wedding. Also, I am a broadcaster on on TRI 102.5 FM. You can check me out there at www.tri1025.com Good announcements are a daily part of my life, so my announcements always sound good at the weddings and events that I handle. The public speaking, however, is another factor in the cost of hiring a good Fort Collins DJ.
Reading the room and knowing the music is another part of being an outstanding Fort Collins DJ. In my opinion, a DJ should never really know what music is going to work until they are in the actual room for the actual event. There are definitely ways to plan ahead, and some songs play well in almost any crowd (see Sinatra), but the mood in every room is different. So, as the people file into the room, I will have on a ‘can’t miss hit’ and I’ll slowly take stock of who is in my audience, and will tailor the playlist to reflect that. One of my favorite personal methods I use to help me find the music for a given room is to ‘count wrinkles’. People love the music they grew up with, so if I see a lot of wrinkles, indicating an older crowd, I reach back to the best songs from decades ago. If I see mostly tight, fresh, young skin, it’s new hotness all night. I literally profile and try to understand the average age of the crowd. That is one of the biggest influences on how I choose what I play that day. The intangible qualities of being able to read the room and knowing what music to play comes from a desire to understand the situation and from a knowledge of the music. These things are also what you pay for when you hire a quality Colorado Wedding DJ.
So, if you’re engaged and looking for vendors, I wish you good luck, and I would be happy to answer any questions for you that I can.
